Subject: idNews: v1.2 release delayed

Date: 12 Feb 1994 01:21:09 -0600

Organization: id Software

Sorry for the extended net absence. As usual, things have been very busy.

Doom v1.2:

I'm afraid Doom v1.2 has been delayed due to complications with the

Gravis UltraSound support. We enjoy only one thing less than making

a release date and not being able to meet it- releasing a product

with bugs in it. In that light, I can only say that we will try our

hardest to expediate the GUS fixes and get v1.2 out as soon as

possible.

The overanxious can help us a great deal by not tying up our e-mail

and voice-mail boxes with "when will it be out?" messages. Please

internalize the strain and let it come to a boil on your pillow or

perhaps some nasties in v1.1. It's nice as a developer to be on the

net, but as of yet, we have no virtual secretaries to filter out the

volumninous one-word answer mail and the actual mail we need to run

the company. When it is released, we will announce it simultaneously

on many online services and of course, the Usenet.

The NEXTSTEP version of Doom v1.2 has been released. It is residing

on cs.orst.edu: /pub/next/submissions. We have already received

feedback on it and made minor fixes & changes for the DOS v1.2.

However, any further feedback (on bugs only- not feature adds) is

appreciated.

xDoom:

I am getting a lot of supportive mail on my port of Doom to XFree86

under Linux. Thanks for your mail- the port is shaping up well. To

answer the most common mail I get:

o- Probably $40, released the same way as the DOS version.

o- Those owning the DOS version will only need the new executables

which will probably be sent to them for only the charge of

shipping and handling.

o- Don't hold me to the above two answers. They're the most sensible

solutions that present themselves. We shall see.

o- No, the source code will not leave id, even w/ NDA's-o-plenty.

o- Yes, I look forward porting it to other UNIX's. However, to do

this, I will need a development workstation on loan. If you like

Doom and work for Sun, SGI, HP, IBM, etc, and can convince someone

that this is a noble cause (it is), there's an excellent chance that

I can get it ported in short order after the Linux port. You and

your company will be mentioned in the game for this honorable deed.

Doom movie scripts:

If you would like to post public domain movie script ideas for Doom

to the Usenet, feel free. However, do not e-mail us with ideas. We

have been contacted by Hollywood types on the possibility of a movie,

and we do not want anyone to claim we stole ideas from their scripts

if it comes to pass. Thanks..

Quake:

Rumors are already flying about our next game, Quake. We have ideas

and theories. Some of them get out. Please do not take them too

seriously. Doom is almost completely different from the original

spec. It can be assumed that Quake will follow suit. It will not be

out until some time in 1995. We don't have the vaguest idea on

timeframes for it yet.

Not related:

This is a personal thing as I hate Barney, but I saw the Barney

patches to Doom and... er... he's flat. I'll offer an official Doom

tee to the artist who can draw the best Barney graphics patches by

March 11. Not interested in straight scans. Want to see your

artistic talents (used for Good). Good sfx and death frames a big

plus.
