Here's an edited transcript of Bears visit on irc a couple of nights

ago, credit to whoever did it, not me:

----------------------------------

Session Start: Tue May 07 23:14:34 1996

* Logging #quake to: [#quake.log]

*** Bear (Home@192.246.40.152) has joined #quake

hey

<_budman> bear: how come carmack, romero. and american

werent in the time picture?

bud: because it was at about 9 am when the

picture dudes came, and they prolly just left about

3-4 am

Bear: How's that axe comin?

egg: i got screen shots of the mike wilson using

the ax on monsters, pretty damn cool actually

you can see the other guy swining the ax!

bear: you should be able to through axe, and then take it

from dead body

tima: good idea

Bear: the axe. Is the axe going to be similar to the one

that the Fighter used in Hexen?

thin: no, different, well similar like you swing it and cut

stuff

Bear, so can we assume that we can see other players

change all weapons?

view: to assume makes an ass outta you and me :)

Bear: do you know the special properties that the axe

will contain, or is that out of your league thus far, or do you

have no idea how it will be?

thin: it's pretty much like an, well, like an axe. it has

a sharp edge, and when you swing it, and hit something, it sorta

cuts things

thin: sorry for the sarcasm, just couldn't help myself

Bear: an axe. With a huge blade, cuts through almost

about anything. yeah, I've heard about those. But I've never

actually SEEN one. ;)

bear: can you distinquish what other players in

deathmatch are holding by there weapon changing there dude is

carrying

egg: no

<_Solo_> =95=95 Will someone tell me if i will be able to run full

quake on my 486 dx2 66 =94=94

solo: odds are very against you on that one

Hey bear, will you sign my copy of Time for

me?

view: sure man

bear: will quake be playable at E3 (in a better than

qtest1 form)?

theweirdo: that is VERY possible

Bear: I imagine everyone has asked you this already but, to

your best judgment, how much longer are we talking here?

nato: ah, soon!

Bear, since you guys seem to be making more time for

the media (interviews, etc.) it must be getting pretty close...no?

view: you one smart cookie

:)

Bear: since yall have dynamic lighting, do yall have

glowing monsters now?

wolf: glowing?

Bear: Glowing monsters would be cool

wolf: dying ones are better!

bear: did the guys from computer gaming world come in

today?

red: yup

bear: what's about mosters that like burn and scream and

trying to run away while you burning them with lightning gun?

tima; no you just hack their ass down

bear: has the look of the axe changed since Friday much?

red: not much

bear: so what's Id's marketing approach? Will it be like 3D

Realms where a shareware version will be released, then a month or

so later the official be ready?

nato: just like we have on all our other games

bear: rumor has it that Id is unveiling a new version of

Quake at E3... care to speculate? :)

nato: that is true

bear: how many levels in the shareware? I lost track when

playing....got sucked into it :)

red: you shouldn't be saying that anyway

Bear, so when you're ready to announce a release date,

where will you leak the news first? Will Romero come to #quake

again like before qtest?

view: romero will probably be here, i might jump on

undernet

Bear: Will the internet shareware release have music, or is

that only on the CD?

tnt: i'm honestly not sure about that

Bear: am I right to assume that the shareware is already

finished?

chyn: no you are not right, it is very close thoughy

Bear, did you let CGW take any new screen shots, or is

their press date late enough that it won't matter?

view: i have spent many hours since last friday making

screenshots for all sorts of different people (mags, etc)

view: as a matter of fact, i sent them some via email, ah,

yes would be the answer

Bear: Will the shareware release support 3-D graphics cards,

or will a patch be required?

tnt: 3-d support will be in a later version

bear: latest issue of PC Gamer reports that LucasArts is

hard at work on their own 3D engine... with multi-player support.

Think they have a chance to compete?

nato: they have a CHANCE to COMPETE, but do they have a

chance to dominate, prolly not

<\\Zep_1\> Bear: Just fing out what "*fixed monkey climbing*" Means

and come back and tells us...its buggin the shit outta me :)

zep: i'll tell you tomororw

Bear, have you tested pentium pros vs. regular

pentiums on quake yet?

asy: no

Bear: any developements on the Doom Movie?

chyn: no not really, just got the script about two months

ago and that was the last any of us heard

i don't know anything about the movie, i didn't even read

the script yet

Bear: what do you expect to be the most common problems to

arrive at tech support?

lop: common stuf, sound probs, video probs

Any word on some MAP editors on the way yet?

bra: they have not finalized the editor issue yet

Bear: so 1st release will be 16?

asy; no actaully that is 32 bit dos also, i was just saying

it will all be ported to work on 95/nt, to what extent it will

utilize the enhancements for NT4 i don't know

Bear, is there any difference in the lightning the gun

shoots from the one the Shambler shoots?

view: ya, the shambler bolt is very big and wide, but the

lightning gun looks more like a lightning bolt from the sky

bear: will win95 quake be made to work on NT 4 (beta 2

has directx stuff)...Tim said he wasn't the person to ask

bear: saw NT4 on a system when I was there...that's why

I ask..plus I love NT4 so far

red: quake will have a native 32 bit version. don't know

if the nt4 version will be any different

Bear, are the dogs short enough that you have to

vertically adjust your aim to hit them?

view: they're about waist high, like a real dog

Bear, there hasn't been much said lately about quake

"capture the flag". Has that whole idea been ditched, or are levels

still being designed with that in mind?

view: the idea has not been ditched, but when/which

version, etc i am not sure about

Bear: is the shareware going to be Kali compatible, not like

doom2

chyn: don't know about kali support

bear: is quake still due "when it's done" or do you have

a more accurate span of time to give us now

drang: very soon

<_-LoAd-_> Bear: What will the chain-lightning gun do differently

than the normal one?

load: haven't seen it yet, it's not in

bear: is weapon always infront of you? (doom style)

tima: what? in front, no, it sticks outta your ear

Bear, many big game companies have set E3 as the

release of big titles. I don't suppose id will follow suit?

view: no, you will see new quake stuff, but there will not

be a "release" then, no handing out of software or anything

Bear: Quake this June, sound reasonable? Maybe July or we

talking fall release?

nato: before fall

Bear: i heard that the reason why doom2 is slow on kali is

because of the way the packets are sent..will Quake be different?

chyn: don't know about kali

Bear: will there be additional releases of other shareware

versions after the initial release?

chyn: possibly

Bear: will Quake be optimized for processors other than

Intel? Cyrix, say, for example.. or has that issue just been not

bothered with...

asy: not really been addressed, we don't have like a 20

peson opt team or anything, just like 3-4 programmers TOTAL

<\\Zep_1\> Bear: Any testing been done on a Cyrix 6x86 chip of any

speed?

zep: no

bear: what kind of cpu do you have on your home system?

red: pentium 100

bear: June? Sounds good to me, how about you? I could live

with July... but June sounds good!

nato: august is still NOT FALL, right?

nato: i just said august was still before fall, because

earlier i said "before fall". It could be earlier than that

Bear: any recommendation on a base system for Quake

shareware?

chyn: pentium 100 16meg, minimum

chyn: for really good performance

<\\Zep_1\> Bear: try to get them to test on a 6x86..I am planning

on buying one for quake..but i dont want quake to suck on it :)

zep: get an intel

i can't believe how many qtest1 messages i got from people

with the fricking nexgen chip that couldn't run quake

becuase the didn't hvae a math-co, how cheap!

Bear: are the sounds in the game Trent's sounds yet or are

they still the old sounds?

wolf: trent is still doing many sounds as we speak

bear: does a p6 really make a speed diff in quake?

arcad: no, you get GREAT performance outta a high end

pentium, and very good performance outta a low end pentium

Bear, how long for a unix compatable release? (i.e.

sgixdoom)

view: i don't know, ddt is doning the linux port

bear: weapons been redesigned yet?

nato; actually i saw kevin working on the new wepon models,

they look incredible

nato: the qtest weapons were just "place holders" so you

knew what weapon you had, they were not even intended to be final

<_Solo_> Bear: will quake suck?

solo: oh yes, quake will suck bad

<_Solo_> Bear: Will it support more than Sound Blaster 2.0?

solo: and compatibles

cola: i'm the Support Director, responsible for setting up

all the support (and the new game hints line) before quake's

release

Bear: Do you think the Duke craze will end enough for

Quake to take hold? Or once Duke gets popular, Quake will be

second, or even tenth?

rod: it won't have to end, we are talking about the next

generation game here

Bear: are the sounds in the game Trent's sounds yet or are

they still the old sounds? hello? can anyone here me?

wolf: mix

bear: what are cheats in quake? will one be idbear ?

:)

tima: no

bear, can you tell us anything about the "bosses"?

view: no, they're not in yet, just the wire frame of one at

this point

<_Solo_> Bear: you sure about the dx2 66 thing??? What about a

pentium overdrive 83?

solo: that might work.

EVERYONE: you all must realize that we are building the

next generation game here, and thus it will require the next

generration computer

Bear, so will the next release be another test? or

Shareware?

scary: shareware

bear: good move...quake on 486 like doom was on my 386.

upgrade time people!

red: you're right!

<\\Zep_1\> Bear: I have 32 meg ram, but in Qtest my surface cache

never goes above 7.3 meg...is that normal?

zeb: the surface cache has to do with the level size

Bear: so more screen shots will be out with in a week?

view: yes, more screenshots

Bear, how come the surface cache decreases in size each

time i reload a level? was that a bug?

scary: i really don't know

bear: do you have curves in architecture of quake levels?

tima: never really looker, or thought about it

<_Solo_> Bear: SO I'VE STILL GOT HOPE IF I UPGRADE????!!!!!

YES!!!!!!!!

solo: don't get too excited, we still haven't set the

minimum threshold for the game yet!

<^Elysium^> Bear: What will the mininum ping speed be for Net

quake?

ely: under 100 should be pretty good

<\\Zep_1\> Bear: Under 100..hahaha..I hope thats a joke!

zep: what do you get at 28.8 at some of the current servers
