I have just written a utility under Linux, called qsniff, to locate any
running Quake servers via IPX. I have uploaded the source code to
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idstuff2/incoming. It is under the GPL, and as
such, freely redistributable. Feel free to grab it, play with it, beat it
against the wall, etc., as long as I get credit. :)
Qsniff will return all available information about a game -- server address,
server name, map name, the number of players currently in the game, and the
maximum number of players - the same stuff SLIST gives you, because this is
all Quake sends out.
Obviously, this is only written to work with Quake Test 1, and any
subsequent releases will very likely NOT work with qsniff v0.1. Given the
time and a protocol which is possible to reverse-engineer, I'll try to keep
it up-to-date with future releases, though.
Please note that you will need to have compiled your Linux kernel with IPX
networking enabled, and you need to have enabled the IPX interface.
Depending on which distribution you have, you can probably do this by
executing the following as root:
ipx_interface add -p eth0 802.3
Note that this is just a toy, and I make no guarantees that it will ever
work for anyone, even me. If it doesn't work for you, and you think you
know why, I'd love to hear it, but please don't bug me if you can't compile
it or something. Chances are, it's something obvious, such as your kernel
version. Anyway, that's my philosophy. ;)
