[1-2] What is the difference between Quake and Duke 3D?

While many would argue that Duke is a 3d game, it's not. Here are some

differences between the two engines:

* Quake uses 3D models for levels, Duke uses sectors over sectors.

* Quake uses 3D models for items, Duke uses 2d sprites (like Doom).

[1-3] What is the latest version of Quake?

The current latest version is v1.00. It has several changes from the inital

release of v0.91.

[1-4] Where can I get the latest version of Quake?

The latest version can be obtained from id's ftp site, or from Walnut Creek

Cd-rom and it's many mirrors:

ftp.idsoftware.com/dir

ftp.cdrom.com/dir

[2] The Console

---------------

[2-1] What is the console?

The console is one (of many) features carried over from qtest. By pushing

the tilde key (that funny squigly below the escape button), it will bring

down the console. For advanced players, it offers a shortcut to avoid menus.

Almost every aspect of the game can be changed through the console. See the

command list for more details.

[2-2] What are the commands for the console?

This is an impartial list of commands derived from Kamikaze's list. It can

be found at:

That's all! There are many more commands, but I only listed the ones that

you'll probably actually use. Check the full list at the address above.

[2-3] What are aliases and how do I use them?

Aliases are strings of commands tagged to one, that can be used to create

various actions. For instance, setting the fov to a small number, and locking

mlook, while setting the sensitivity very high can be bound to one command

to turn on sniper mode (love this one). Here is how you make an alias:

In a cfg file (except config.cfg...use autoexec.cfg), write in all of your

aliases like so:

alias

Give your alias a name like snipe_t, and enclose the commands with quotes.

Seperate multiple commands with semicolons. Then bind your command to a key.

I bind snipe_t to the s key, to toggle sniper mode. Look around for various

interesting commands that have been made.

[3] Playing Quake

-----------------

[3-1] What are the cheat codes for Quake?

The cheat codes are as follows. They must be typed in at the console.

GOD - Toggle god mode on/off

FLY - Toggle fly mode on/off

NOCLIP - Toggle noclip mode on/off

MAP - Switch to map . Valid shareware values are start,

and e1m1 thru e1m7.

IMPULSE x - Listed below

(Note: Impulse codes do not take effect until leaving the console.)

x = 1 thru 8 - switch to weapon x

x = 9 - Give all weapons/ammo/keys

x = 10 - Switch to next weapon

x = 11 - Give a rune (use 4 times for all runes)

x = 255 - Give Quad Damage

x = -1 - Same as 255

GIVE x y - Listed below

x = 3 thru 8 - Give weapon x (y has no meaning?)

x = S - Give y shells (valid values 0-255)

x = N - Give y nails (valid values 0-255)

x = R - Give y rockets (valid values 0-255)

x = C - Give y cells (valid values 0-255)

x = H - Give y health (valid values -32767 thru 32767!!)

So far, no one knows how to cheat for the following:

Change armor value

Give Pentagram of Protection

Give Ring of Shadows

[3-2] How do you get to the secret level?

There are two ways to get to the secret level:

1) Type "map e1m8" at the console (no quotes)

2) Access the hidden slipgate in The Grisly Grotto (e1m4):

* Start by getting the silver key from the pier in the main room (See the

walkthrough on e1m4 on how to get there).

* Go through the silver door.

* Go right, step on the plate, then walk down the hall to the yellow armor.

* Turn right, walk down stairs to room with a bridge across slime pool.

* Step on plate in middle of bridge to open walls revealing orges on each

side of the bridge.

* Take out the orges.

* Go up the elevator. While going up, do a 180 so you don't get smacked

in the back.

* Kill all enemies, then step on the plates in this order:

Front

Left

Back

Right

Center

* Make sure to avoid the spike traps. Two small doors will open. Go in one.

You will fall into the rooms where the orges were. Get all the items, then

push the snake plate...it will say "One more to go."

* Jump down to the bridge, go up the elevator, and drop into the other room.

Hit the other plate. A message will appear saying "A secret cave has opened."

* Return to the room with the pier. Facing the pier from the start of the

level, go to the right wall underwater. A bright octagon cave will be there.

Go in to the back wall, then swim straight up until you land in a secret room

with a slipgate. Get the grenade launcher, health, ammo, etc., then step into

the slipgate. There you go!

[3-3] How do I beat the shareware boss?

The boss is impervious to all weapons, so you have to use the convienently

placed trap around the boss to kill him/her/it.

* Start by going straight ahead to get the rune. As soon as you do, the boss

will pop up in front of you. Go back to the start and to the left or right to

avoid the boss's attacks.

* Go along the hallway along the side of the large lava pit and behind the

boss.

* Go up the elevator. Walk along the catwalks on one side and step on the

plate.

* Go across the floor above the start of the level, and to the other catwalk.

* Step on the other plate. Run back towards the elevator.

* Walk onto the balcony across from the elevator. Step on the 3rd plate.

A lightning bolt will shoot across two posts and zap the boss. Repeat this

procedure as necessary (running in circles), until the boss is dead.

* Enjoy the 21 gib salute.

[3-4] How do you get to the nightmare mode?

In the starting level (introduction), walk through one of the skill

slipgates and enter the episode select hall. Pick the 4th episode

(the hallway on the right). Walk slowly into the pool of water. As soon as

you start to fall, backstep through the water to the wall. Instead of falling

to the floor, you'll land on a wooden beam. Walk along the beam to the doorway

on the left. Walk forward, then left through the nightmare slipgate.

[3-5] How do you beat each level with 100% secrets?

Here is a list of walkthroughs for each level

[3-5-1] Walkthrough for E1M1

Secret 1: At the start, jump up onto the computer console at right. Use the

axe on the wall on the right side. It will open to reveal a box of shells.

Secret 2: After riding down the elevator, jump into the water on the right

side of the bridge and swim through the cavern. Walk onto the ledge for 100%

health. Continue down the cavern, ride the elevator up, go through the door,

and get the armor and shells. You'll be back at the beginning of the level.

Secret 3: In the main room past the bridge, there is a column on the right

side next to another computer console. Walk around between the column and

the console, and face towards the column. Look up and shoot the globe picture

on the column. An elevator will lift you onto the console. Walk along to

a picture of another globe on the wall of the console. Shoot it. It will open

to reveal a hallway with a Quad Damage powerup.

Secret 4: After pushing the button to make the bridge appear, walk halfway

across and turn left. Aim up and shoot the symbol inside the column. A door

to your left will open revealing a super shotgun.

Secret 5: After walking down to the last switch on the lamp, jump onto the

railing. Jump onto the light. Jump onto the switch. Jump in the direction

the ramp faces, and land on a block extending from the wall overhead. Step

onto the next block to the left. Jump into the room with the 100% damage.

* Note: This one is very tricky...I use the fly cheat to get it.

Secret 6: At the very bottom of the ramp, turn right. Behind a column is

a biosuit. Get it, jump over the railing, and into the slime. Do a 180 and

go forward under the hallway you would normally take. Follow the tunnel

to a room with an opening inside a metal ring. Surface inside the ring.

Get all the items (including yellow armor) and walk into the slipgate. You

will be back in the main room past the first bridge.

[3-5-2]

Not completed...I'll work on it.

[4] Troubleshooting

-------------------

[4-1] Where's the music?

This is a question many ask. And the anwser is: There is no music!

The full registered/shareware version on cd will have 10 or so tracks done

by Nine Inch Nails. For now, just pop in your favorite pissed of artist,

and gib away! The game plays the cd automatically (but in a wierd order)

Use these commands for manipulating the cd order:

cd stop Stop current track

cd play Play track once

cd loop Loop track continuously

cd info Current track playing, track times, etc...

cd remap ... Remaps the track order. When it is told to play

track 1, it plays instead.

More to come...
