I. Introduction
===========
Hello, and welcome to what I hope will become a regular
lil' thing. As I write the first introduction to The Ultimate
Unofficial Quake C.A.Q., I have just moments ago completed the
sharware version of Quake. I sat back from my machine and went to
heaven. The game is...well, it's more than a game, isn't it? There's
no going back now. All else pales into insignificance. Wave goodbye
to your lives, guys...
This C.A.Q. may be distributed freely and quoted from by
other authours provided I (Carl Blake) are mentioned.
I-i. What is Quake?
----------------------
Quake is a first-person perspective shoot-'em up. What does
that mean? Well, it's "first-person" because you see through the eyes
of the character you play, as opposed to controlling a sprite
representing you i.e. Commander Keen, Sonic and Mario to name a few.
It is a "shoot-'em up" because...erm...you shoot things!
(See also :- Space Invaders!)
I-ii. How is Quake different to Doom?
--------------------------------------------
Doom is also a first-person perspective shoot-'em up by
id software. It was released in December, 1993 and changed the face
of PC gaming. The two games differ because they use different game
engines. Games made using the Doom engine (Doom, Doom II, Heretic,
Hexen & Strife) are not true 3D games in the sense that if you look
at sprite from one side, it will be the same all the way round. That's
because the Doom engine uses 2D pictures for sprites whereas Quake
uses polygon based models with texture mapping. Quake uses the Quake
engine which displays sprites in true 3D; if you walk around an
ammo box, for example, you will notice that all the sides are
different.
I-iii. What is a C.A.Q.?
--------------------------
C.A.Q. stands for Commonly Asked Questions. It is the same
as an F.A.Q. but when I wrote this thing there were already two
Quake F.A.Q.'s on the 'net. I'm just tryin' to be different! :-)
II. Playing Quake
==============
II-i. What machine do I need?
-----------------------------------
To play the shareware version of Quake, you will need an IBM
or compatible PC with DOS or Windows 95. If you want use Quake
in a DOS Box in Win 95 you must have at least 16Mb of RAM otherwise
it will not run.
Rumour has been rife that Quake needs at least a Pentium to
run at all, but this is untrue. A 486DX4/60Mhz has been able to
run Quake. Please not that Quake requires a Floating Point Processor
and so will NOT run on a 486SX. PLEASE check your machine has one
(most do these days) before downloading 8Mb of unplayable game.
In DOS, Quake needs only 8Mb of RAM to run. This is the
absolute minimum and it will not run with less. 12Mb or 16Mb will
certainly help Quake to run more smoothly. An ideal Quake machine
would be a 586/100 with 16Mb RAM and a 3D acclerator card, although
this is not neccesary to play Quake.
The shareware version of Quake requires 30Mb of hard disk space
while the registered game needs 80Mb!
II-ii. How do I play my first game?
----------------------------------------
First of all, you'll need a copy of shareware Quake.
Downloading it off the internet is a good idea if you have access. A
list of sites with a copy can be found at the end of this document.
The shareware version comes in two lovely flavours:
1. One huge 8Mb zipped file, quake091.zip
2. 8 seperate zipped files (you need them all), named qsw091_1.zip,
qsw091_2.zip....
Whichever suits you, you will still need to unzip them, so make
sure you have a copy of PKUNZIP handy.
If you don't have 'net access, you can copy the shareware
version off a friend or off a CD-ROM on a magazine. Of course, you
cannot copy & distribute the registered version of Quake.
Right, you've got a copy, unzipped and read the README.TXT?
Okay, run QUAKE.EXE! You an change all the options in that menu.
You can (if you have a CD-ROM drive) play music CDs while playing
Quake. Just pop one in and let it spin!
When you are ready, select NEW GAME to start. You are placed
in the first "virtual menu" where you have to choose your skill level.
Use your selected control method to go through the skill door of
your choice, though I recommend choosing Medium to start with. After
that menu, you will be in the episode selection menu. Since this is
the shareware version, you can only play one episode. Go through the
door marked with two big arrows. Step on the slipgate and you are off!
II-iii. What about Multi-Play?
---------------------------------
You will have noticed, I'm sure, an option on the menu which
let's you start a multiplayer game. Quake can support 2-16 players
over a local network or up to 5 players via a 28,800 bps modem
connection. 2 players can be involved in a deathmatch using a null-
modem connection.
Players choose different coloured shirts and trousers (pants
to our great American cousins) and this can involve team play where
different teams have certain colours.
Setting up a multiplay game is easy. Each player must set-up
their machines so they are connected (modem, null-modem or in a
network). Next, each player must choose his set-up stuff. When
everyone is ready, one person starts the game and everyone else just
joins in when they're ready.
II-iv. The Quake Console
-----------------------------
The Quake console is practically a language within Quake.
Some refer to it as Quake C. The console looks like a DOS prompt
without the C:>. Any aspect of the game can be changed from this
console. It can be accessed through the options menu or by pressing
the tileade key, " ` ", usually below your Escape button.
Here is a list of some of the more useful commands:
COMMAND WHAT IT DOES
========= ============
bgmvolume
color
connect
demos Changes demo to next one in sequence
fraglimt Sets the frag limit
gamma
kill Suicide!
load
quit Ummm........
record
restart Restart the current map
screenshot Records a screenshot to your Quake
directory in PCX format.
For a comprehensive list of console commands, take a look at:
http://kuoi.asui.uidaho.edu/~kamikaze/quake_commands.html
II-v. The Cheats
------------------
Type these into the Quake console:
GOD = God mode, invincible
FLY = Fly mode, use d/c for up and down
IMPULSE 9 = Gives you all the weapons and a load of ammo
NOCLIP = Walk-thru-walls
MAP ExMy = Warp to Episode x, Map y
sv_accelerate
sv_gravity
sv_maxspeed = Set max speed of player, efault 320
IMPULSE 255 = Give the player quad(!) damage
GIVE S - Where S = the number of shells you want, <256
GIVE N - Where N = the number of nails you want, <256
GIVE R - Where R = the number of rockets you want, <256
GIVE C - Where C = the number of cells you want, <256
GIVE H - Where H = the amount of health you want, <32,768
II-vi. Where is the secret level?
------------------------------------
From the Quake console, type: MAP E1M8.
Or, you could look for it underwater in The Grisly Grotto.
But first you will have to open a cave... (that's all I'm saying!)
II-vii. Where is the secret skill?
------------------------------------
Choose yor skill level as normal and enter the episode
select hall. Pick the last (4th) episode. Walk into the pool of
water and as soon as you start to fall, backstep through the water
to the wall. Instead of falling to the floor, you'll land on a
wooden beam. Walk along the beam to the doorway on the left. Walk
forward, then left through the nightmare slipgate.
II-viii. How do you kill the shareware boss?
---------------------------------------------------
Run ahead and grab the rune. Quickly, reverse out and go
either left or right along the passage until you get onto the
lift. Go up in the lift and you will have another two ways to go,
and a push-pad on the floor ahead of you. Don't push it yet! Choose
either left or right and go all the way round the top level back to
the beginning. You will notice as you go round, two more push pads
in the floor, one on either side. Push these so the two coloumns
hanging above the lava pool come down to the monsters height. Push
the push-pad near the lift and a bolt of thunder will fry his brains!
Repeat this process a few times and the baddie will explode messily.
It is important to always KEEP MOVING during this level, otherwise you
will be hit by giant lava rockets. Don't bother trying to rocket
him; he is impervious to all weapons.

III-iii. Quake: IRC and usenet newsgroups
--------------------------------------------------
At the moment I know of only one IRC channel, #quake, which
has pure Quake discussion. As for the newsgroups, there are five
Quake sites, all of them in:-
- rec.games.computer.quake
The ones I know (and use!) are:
= rec.games.computer.quake.announce
= " " .misc
= " " .editing
= " " .playing
= " " .editing
