This message formally announces the public beta release of QuakeBBS

version .99B5 for linux.

QuakeBBS allows server admins to control who has access to their

Quake server as well as providing a friendly server front-end system

for the users.

Here's how it works:

A user telnets into your QuakeBBS system on the port you specify

(defaults to the Quake port of 26000). They are presented with a

login prompt from which they may enter with an existing username or

create a new account (depending on how you've configured your system).

Once in, they can chat with other users online as well as request

access to any of Quake servers you may be running (as of this writing,

only one is supported -- however, support for multiple servers will be

added SOON).

After they have authorized themselves on your server (if they have the

proper security to do so), they may start their Quake locally to

connect and play. If the server is busy, they are automatically added

to a waiting queue and notified when their slot comes available!

Any user that tries to connect to your server without authorization,

gets booted within seconds. It's easy, and it provides YOU, the

server administrator, with ALL the control you could want!

Note to Quake Front-End authors:

As of this date, the interface into the system is telnet, however, I

am more than willing to work with any Quake front-end writers who

would like to build a QuakeBBS interface system into their programs.

I've spent MANY MANY hours on this project, and I'm making it

available totally FREE! All I ask is that you provide me feedback as

to how it's working for you along with any suggestions for improvement

you may have. :-)

More information, including the complete README documentation, can be

found at http://www.mindspring.com/~donovan/quakebbs

Thanks, and enjoy!

PS: Please note this is a linux only release at this point. We ARE

working on a Windows NT port but unfortunately as of yet do not have

one available. Sorry. :-(
