Sorry for shouting in the subject of this article, but I wanted to catch the
attention of the newcomers. :-) If you already know how what is QTEST1 and
how to play it, this article is not for you...
During last week, I have received several questions by e-mail, from people
who wanted to know where they could get the test version of Quake and how to
start the game. I have also seen similar articles in the Quake newsgroups
(mostly in the old group, a.g.q). The answers to these simple questions can
be found easily in the Quake Mini-FAQ and in the various articles that have
been posted in rec.games.computer.quake.announce, but it looks like some new
players (or would-be-players) have missed them. This article will hopefully
help them.
First, here is a list of sites from which you can download the "deathmatch
test" version of Quake, QTEST1.ZIP:

Select the site closest to you when downloading. Once you have the file,
unzip it in a new directory and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE TRYING TO
START THE GAME. It looks like several people have not read the docs that
come with the game and thus they do not even know how to play. You only
have to type one command in order to start the game with one of the three
maps, but you have to read the documentation if you want to know what this
command is. It is very simple, but id Software wants to make sure that
you read README.TXT before playing the game, so that they do not get lots
of useless questions. So please read the docs! :-)
Here is an excerpt from README.TXT, included in the zip file:

:Here it is, the first public TEST of Quake's Network, Sound and Video
:technology. This is NOT a demo and this is not an ALPHA, either. If this
:WAS a demo or an ALPHA, you would see monsters moving around, have more maps
:to play, and see the neat new effects we're programming in right now.
[...]
Have fun with this demo, but don't bug the guys at id Software with tons
of e-mail. As they suggest in the README file, use only the newsgroup
rec.games.computer.quake.misc for discussing this test version:
[...]
:You are invited to send general bug-related information regarding
:the gameplay to the Usenet newsgroup REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.QUAKE.MISC only,
:please don't send us gameplay suggestions directly.
[...]
There are lots of articles that have already been posted about QTEST1 but
it seems that the useful informations have been lost in the high traffic
of these groups. I hope that this article will help the newcomers. Also,
take a look in rec.games.computer.quake.misc and r.g.c.q.editing if you
want to know how to put some monsters in the maps. Several utilities
already allow you to edit the game and add some monsters. You will find
most of them in http://www.cdrom.com/pub/idgames2/.
Have fun!
