First time in this newgroup, started searching out quake sources and low

and behold, but what should I find? A Quake Demo is out at ID and about

20 other places.

Thought you would all like to know.

Daniel

Here is an excerpt from README.TXT, included in the zip file:

:+----------------------------------------+

:| The Official Quake Deathmatch TEST |

:| Released Saturday, February 24th, 1996 |

:| Copyright (C) 1996 id Software, inc. |

:+----------------------------------------+

:| Operating Instructions |

:| by John Romero |

:+----------------------------------------+

:

:Here it is, the first public TEST of Quake's Network, Sound and Video

:technology. This is NOT a demo and this is not an ALPHA, either. If this

:WAS a demo or an ALPHA, you would see monsters moving around, have more maps

:to play, and see the neat new effects we're programming in right now.

:Please keep in mind that this TEST is a DOS-ONLY program -- running it from

:Win95 may harm performance. If you run this TEST from Win95, you MUST have

:a 16mb RAM system.

Have fun with this demo, but don't bug the guys at id Software with tons

of e-mail. As they suggest in the README file, use only the newsgroup

rec.games.computer.quake.misc for discussing this test version:

[...]

:You are invited to send general bug-related information regarding

:the gameplay to the Usenet newsgroup REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.QUAKE.MISC only,

:please don't send us gameplay suggestions directly.

[...]

A minor gripe: the TCP/IP networking in this demo version will only work

with the (commercial) TCP/IP drivers from Beame & Whiteside and they don't

support other drivers. But this will hopefully change soon. This is only

a test version and the full version will probably have many more features.

Also, the programmers out there will propably notice that Quake was compiled

with DJGPP v2.0 and uses CWSDPMI. Great!

Quake deathmatch demo is available. This is a bug-hunt version published by

id, and is not intended to be an example of the release version of quake. I

happened to be checking out the quake pix on the id web page, and to my

surprise it said "QUAKE DEMO IS OUT" at the bottom of the page, and had a list

of mirrors. The file is name qtest1.zip, and was loaded on the server around 2

am on the 25th. A very rough demo as far as visuals, and no monsters or music

yet, but some interesting physics has been incorporated into the new engine.

Check out map #3 in particular...if you run around long enough you will get a

real surprise when you walk off of a certain overhang...Deathmatch strategy

will definitely be different! The readme requests feedback on any bugs or

compatibility issues, and so far my only note is that it prefers dos mode

instead of running in a window under Win95, but the readme suggests dos mode as

necessary already.

Happy Hunting, and thanks to id for giving us something to tinker with until

the real thing is ready!
