TEN Announces Level Design Contest, QUAKE Enhancement
San Francisco-based Total Entertainment Network (TEN) announced a design
contest sponsored by Intel in which more than $5,000 in cash and prizes
will be awarded to the winning entrants in four categories:
* best QUAKE C mod
* best Quake map
* best Duke Nukem 3D solo and deathmatch maps
Maps are game levels, and Quake C mods are extensions of the core Quake
game - new player attributes, rules, weapons, etc. In addition to $1,000 in
cash for the winning entry in each category, five Intel Pentium OverDrive
processors with MMX technology upgrades and other runner-up prizes will be
awarded. TEN will accept submissions from May 5 through June 1, 1997; for
complete contest rules and entry guidelines, visit TEN's Mapstravaganza web
site at http://www.ten.net/intelmapstrav . TEN membership is not required
to enter.
Submitted levels will be judged upon the following criteria:
* Originality: Judging will be based on creativity and originality of
design. This is a showcase for the gamers' skills in developing games,
taking the basic aspects of the game and using those features to create a
unique gaming experience.
* Design: This encompasses both graphic attractiveness and basic
functionality. The design should be clean with no obvious flaws, and run
successfully on a 60MHz Pentium.
* Deathmatch Suitability: Each entry will be judged on its ability to
provide stimulating, entertaining game play in a multi-player environment.
The factors that make a level successful - including size, ease of play and
overall gameplay qualities - will be considered.
