REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)

unmoderated group rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c

Newsgroups lines:

rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c Modifying Quake with Quake-C.

This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a

world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup

rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c. This is not a Call for Votes (CFV);

you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below.

RATIONALE: rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c

The computer game Quake, by id Software (the makers of Doom), is more

customizable than its predecessors Doom, Heretic, Hexen and other

games based on the same engine, as the behaviour of a game is

controlled by scripts written in Quake-C, a language using a syntax

similar to C. Quake-C is currently discussed in several places,

including the existing group rec.games.computer.quake.editing and the

quake-c mailing list. The mailing list gets up to 100 messages per

day and has a high number of subscribers (more than 400 at the time of

this writing, still increasing). A newsgroup would provide a more

efficient way of sharing the information. Also, this would move the

Quake-C topics out of the r.g.c.q.editing group, which could then

concentrate mostly on level- and model-editing discussions.

CHARTER: rec.games.computer.quake.quake-c

This group is for discussing Quake-C, the language which defines

Quake's behaviour. All technical topics related to Quake-C are

allowed, such as programming tricks and special effects, how to enable

some features, etc. Level editing topics do not belong here and

should be posted in .editing.

Excerpts of source code may be posted here, as long as they are

reasonably short (not more than a few dozen lines). Longer scripts or

compiled code should only be announced here and posted in a binaries

group (alt.binaries.games.quake) or uploaded on a FTP or WWW server.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase

of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup

should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue

for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this

proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For

Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion

warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attemps to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation

guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How

to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these

documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any

questions about the process.

DISTRIBUTION:

This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups:

news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,

rec.games.computer.quake.announce, rec.games.computer.quake.editing,

comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action, rec.games.computer.doom.editing

and following mailing list:

quake-c@seal-industries.com (Quake-C discussion list)

Send a message with the single word "info quake-c" in the body

to for more information.
